Association between Lactation and Metabolic Syndrome in Mid-life Women
Kim Sung-Hi

Abstract
Objectives:Preventing metabolic syndrome is known to be important for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. WHO recommends breast feeding to reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome. This study was done to examine the effects of lactation on metabolic syndrome as an intermediate cause of cardiovascular disease.

Methods:During September, 2005-December, 2007 we recruited 1,617 women who were over 40 years old and premenopausal. We collected data from interviews, physical examinations and serum chemistry. Metabolic syndrome was defined using NCEP-ATP ¥² and lactation group was defined that over 1 month breast feeding per baby. The association between lactation and metabolic syndrome was analyzed by x©÷-test, t-test, median test and multiple logistic regression (SPSS ver. 14.0).

Results:After adjusting covariates (age, education, smoking status, drinking status, regular exercise, BMI) the odds ratio of lactation group for metabolic syndrome and fasting blood sugar were 0.568 (CI=0.368~0.877) and 0.498 (CI=0.273~0.908). Although the odds ratios of waist, high BP, high TG were lower, they were not significant. Lactation group was older, lower education level but more frequent regular exercise than no-lactation group. In proportion to the increase of lactation duration, the incidence of metabolic syndrome is probably decreased. but this was not proved in this study.

Conclusions:This cross-sectional study suggests that lactation was associated with the lower risk of metabolic syndrome among mid life women over 40 years and premenopausal.
